From the 19th - 23rd March, we celebrated our annual Feel Good Week. This is where we celebrate good healthy wellbeing and have guest speakers in to talk to us.
On Thursday 22nd, Kenneth Heffernan came to talk to us about his struggles as a teen growing up in Ireland. He told us how he found it hard to fit in as he was quiet and a 'loner'. He told us how when he went into secondary school, he began to act up to get attention as he didn't get any at home. After the Leaving Cert he was left behind by his friends as they wanted to make something of themselves. He told us about how he binge drank, took pills, cut himself, literally anything that would numb how he felt. This was an eye opener for us as we discovered that even those who don't seem alone and are tough can be shaken to the core and not feel ok on the inside. He finally asked for help after crashing his car on purpose after hanging didn't work. He became a psychiatrist and now goes to schools to talk to students and urge them to speak up so they won't have to feel like he did. I found the talk very deep and I took a lot from it. At lunchtime on Thursday, we had a social dancing class with Niall Doorhy. As I am doing Social Dancing for my Gaisce, I found the learning to do the jive very boring. However it was fun to dance with the teachers and fellow students. We also did some line dancing such as the slosh and the bunny hop. I really enjoyed the bunny hop as it was a new dance for me and fun to do. I hope everyone enjoyed the Social Dancing as much as I did. It would've been nice to have Niall stay longer but it was a worthwhile 40 minutes even so. |
