On the 11th October, Paddy Daly came to talk to us about the work that St. Vincent de Paul do for people all over the world. He began by telling us about its founder, Frédéric Ozanam. He was a young French man living in Paris who wanted to help those who needed it. So with the Sisters of Charity and his friends, Frédéric set up St Vincent de Paul in 1833. SVP arrived in Ireland in 1844, one year before the Great Famine.
Paddy spoke to us about his experiences helping those in other countries of the world. He spoke about the friends he made while volunteering in Haiti and Brazil and about the lives people had there. For example, in Brazil the people from rural places would move into the outskirts of the city during a bank holiday when there was less military enforcement. This was because they needed to get someone into education, find new jobs or get someone medical help.
Paddy also showed us a video of a father doing the Iron Man Challenge with his disabled son. An Iron Man Challenge is when you swim 5km, cycle 180km and finally run 42km all in under 16hrs. This story was very touching and I really admired the father for doing it with his son.
From the talk with Paddy, I learned many new things. I learned about why SVP is important not just in Ireland but also all over the world. I also became inspired to keep trying and achieve things in my life from watching the Iron Man Challenge. I hope Paddy comes again soon and wish him luck in the future.
